Today the kids finished writing the class promise. Mrs. S used this as a shared writing experience. On Friday, they brainstormed a list of things to go in the promise (help others when they are hurt, listen when others are talking, include others, etc). Today, she had them look for items that they could group together, pick and order, and put them into sentences. After it was written out they all got to sign it and it is posted on the wall with their self portraits around it. In the end, the promise seemed really long, but Mrs. S said many of the teachers at the school have been doing a class promise, so the kids are used to it, and come up with a lot of good ideas to go in it. I know many teachers post
their 3 or 4 classroom rules, but I can see how this would gain the kids' buy in. It will be interesting to see how it plays out during the year and if it is referred back to or not.
